It incorporates major ecological and evolutionary patterns covering all freshwater habits on the planet and divides the world into 426 ecoregions. It is intended to serve as a framework for regional conservation efforts. Dr. Berra’s book, Freshwater Fish Distribution, (2007, University of Chicago Press) was an important resource for the approximately 160 scientists involved in the project, and he personally contributed to the Australasia and Oceania ecoregions.
